Syllabus

The goals of this course are (a) to introduce basic concepts and principles in the field of classroom assessment; (b) to review and discuss traditional as well as alternative methods for assessing students' learning and achievements, with special reference to secondary school science and mathematics; and (c) to develop participants' practical ability to construct valid and reliable assessment tools. The course is practice-oriented, and towards its end participants will be required to apply the knowledge acquired in order to produce an assessment unit for a topic of their choice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Apply basic principles in the field of classroom assessment for the purpose of writing and reviewing items for assessment.
  2. Distinguish between traditional and alternative methods for assessing students' learning in science and mathematics, and consider their appropriateness for evaluating various learning goals.
  3. Construct valid and reliable assessment tools for units within the secondary school curriculum.
