Syllabus

Lesson observation has long been a central tool in Science Education research. In this course we will (a) discuss the role of lesson observation in various kinds of research (e.g., classroom research, teacher education research at the preservice and in service levels, international comparative assessment studies, task design research); (b) explore several theoretical and conceptual frameworks that guide lesson observation to address different research purposes; and (c) consider the relevance of diverse methodologies involving lesson observation to the current research conducted by the course participants.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between several theories and frameworks used in research involving lesson observation.
  2. Recognize the affordances and limitations of these theories and frameworks for various purposes in Science Education research.
  3. Suggest applications of the methodologies discussed in the course for their own research, where relevant.
