Syllabus

During the course we will examine some everyday technologies in order to understand what kind of mathematics they use. We will mostly follow the book "Mathematics and Techonology" by Ch. Rousseau and Y. Saint-Aubin, and will cover such topics as GPS, error-correcting codes and RSA, image and audio compression and some others.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge and skills required for reading popular mathematical books, broaden their mathematical knowledge, get a taste of mathematics as a developing science.
