Course Description

In the modern world, and consequentially in the mind of the average school student, the Cartesian dualist paradigm is dominant: spirit and matter, psyche and body, are typically perceived as incompatible opposites, or at some tension. The prototypical socio-intellectual outcome of the Cartesian paradigm is a conception of nature as lacking any redundancy or as disenchanted, and a reductionist approach toward nature, animals, and humans. This course aims to provide to its students an elaborated consideration of anti-Cartesian holistic theoretical approaches, to promote the development of integrative approaches concerning the relationship between the sciences and the Humanities. To do so, we discuss key concepts which underlie integrative (or pragmatist) nature-friendly approaches: non-reductionist and holistic approaches to ontological, anthropological, and epistemological topics and issues. We shall also make clear the educational import of the concepts and ideas we discuss.

Learning Outcomes

Successful learning will include an understanding of the main complications in the modern views of nature and the human creature; an understanding of the difference between competing philosophical models of reasoning about the structure of reality (monism, dualism, integration); an ability to discuss the contribution of pragmatic approaches to the Humanities and their relevance for environmentalist matters; and an ability to delineate the way in which metaphysical concepts are entangled with naturalistic ones.
