The course explores topics related to the teaching and learning of mathematics among sub-groups of learners: gifted and advanced students, low achievers, students with special needs, and more.
The articles to be read, as well as the lectures, will consider various aspects of mathematics education from the specific angles of these groups.
We will discuss cognitive, metacognitive and affective characteristics of students; teaching approaches that take these characteristics into account; principles and possible strategies for designing appropriate tasks.
Towards the end of the course, we shall attempt to compare between high and low achievers and also touch upon the dilemma of mixed-ability vs. same-ability grouping in mathematics classes.
