Syllabus

This is the first course in a sequence of three, in which students learn toward their final project in the program. During this course students are introduced to teaching practices/strategies (cognitive apprenticeship and knowledge integration) that are based on learning theories (Cognitive constructivism, Social constructivism). Strategies are introduced via the relevant literature and through modeling of the strategies during the course. Students are expected to develop a learning unit that implements a theory based teaching practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course- students should be able to:

  1. Describe in their own words a theory based teaching practice
  2. Explain in their own words how a chosen teaching practice is based on a learning theory.
  3. Design a learning unit based on the chosen teaching practice to achieve a desired learning outcome.
  4. Design learning outcomes for their unit based on their experience, biology high school curricular goals and science education literature.
  5. Reflect on the influence of the teaching strategy and development of learning materials on their perception of teachers' goal in the learning process of their students.

Reading List

Each student will receive individual list of suggested reading according to the subject of their project.
