Syllabus
The goals of this course are (a) to introduce basic concepts and principles in the field of classroom assessment; (b) to review and discuss traditional as well as alternative methods for assessing students' learning and achievements, with special reference to secondary school science and mathematics; and (c) to develop participants' practical ability to construct valid and reliable assessment tools. The course is practice-oriented, and towards its end participants will be required to apply the knowledge acquired in order to produce an assessment unit for a topic of their choice.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Apply basic principles in the field of classroom assessment for the purpose of writing and reviewing items for assessment.
- Distinguish between traditional and alternative methods for assessing students' learning in science and mathematics, and consider their appropriateness for evaluating various learning goals.
- Construct valid and reliable assessment tools for units within the secondary school curriculum.
