Syllabus

The course will be built around four major, inter-twined subjects:

Science as a pillar of society: what is science literacy, why is it important for every citizen, for society and for humanity at large, how can it be accomplished: From literacy through expertise, professionalism and leadership in science, on personal and social levels, to our role as scientists in leading them.

-    Communicating science: Different goals and different audiences require different science communication tools and practices: From articles and social networks through hybrid and online courses to creating and managing a science blog/vlog, science videos etc.

-    Science as a major engine of social mobility and development – science as a legitimate hub of innovation, creativity and critical thinking; Science education for all as a tool for decision making and problem solving; the role science education has in Israel’s peripheries, sectors and sub-groups.

-    Science as a leading tool for active social engagement: through case studies such as climate change, food security, health promotion and more, questions such as - what can I do, as a student today and in whatever awaits me in the future, will be addressed.  

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

-     Understand the importance and relevance of science communication and outreach for all realms of society.

-     Develop a sense of responsibility and involvement in science education

-     Develop skills of communicating "my science" for different purposes, in different situations and to various target populations

-     Experience and develop basic tools to engage others in science.
