Course Identification

The course explores topics related to the teaching and learning of mathematics among sub-groups of learners: low achievers, gifted and advanced students, girls, and more. 
The articles to be read, as well as the lectures, will consider various aspects of mathematics education from the specific angles of these groups.

We will discuss cognitive, metacognitive and affective characteristics of students; teaching approaches that take these characteristics into account; principles and possible strategies for designing appropriate tasks.
Towards the end of the course, we will also touch upon the dilemma of mixed-ability vs. same-ability grouping in mathematics classes.

Upon successful completion of the course- students should be able to:

1. Conduct a "mini-research" concerning one of the sub-groups of learners discussed in the course.
2. Analyze and evaluate results in light of the literature read during the course.
3. Produce a research report following pre-specified rules.

Reading material will be uploaded to the course website. Information about the required reading will be given weekly during course lectures.
