Life Sciences (Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience Track): Laboratory; Elective; 1.00 points
Life Sciences (ExCLS Track): Elective; 1.00 points

Comments

*The course will take place at room 127, Launsco Building (Brain Sciences Department).

The Lab course consists of 2 full day sessions. The students will be divided into 8 teams (two students each) in four groups. The number of students is kept low so as to allow each of you hand-on experience with the immunohistochemical techniques and the operation of the equipment (sliding microtome, microscopes, etc).

Syllabus

Histology refers to the microscopic study of tissue. The visualization of the

brain’s cytoarchitecture is an important complement to the studies of function and gross

anatomy performed in other labs. It is used in a number of areas essential to neuroscience

research, such as verifying the placement of an electrode, following the spread of viruses or stem cells injected to the brain or identifying regions affected by a lesion,  disease  or genetic manipulation

Learning Outcomes

To become familiar with immunohistochemical techniques.

To use staining techniques in combination with a stereotaxic atlas to identify anatomical

structures in sectioned brain tissue.

To compare  normal brain and spinal cord sections with those taken from a diseased animal model ( Gaucher's disease).
