  • Methods in cell biology
  • Introduction. Cell as a mechanical system
  • Actin and actin-related proteins
  • Microtubules, associated proteins (MAPs) and organizing centers (MTOCs)
  • Intermediate filaments and cytoskeletal linkers. Cytoskeleton and nucleoskeleton
  • A multitude of molecular motors
  • Cell signaling and cytoskeletal regulation. Small G-proteins

  • Cell division
  • Cell adhesion to extracellular matrix (ECM) and integrin-dependent signaling
  • Cell-cell junctions
  • Regulation of cell shape and polarity
  • Individual and collective cell migration
  • Signal transduction and cancer

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of various methods in cell biology
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the regulation of cellular functions - exemplified by regulation of the cytoskeleton, cell division, and cell motility.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of t the interaction between the cell and the environment in health and disease (deregulation of cellular processes in cancer).
